When Earl speaks, I listen - Act II
Saturday night I arrived at The Earl mere seconds after Paul had slammed the passenger side door of Penny the Tour Van with the keys locked securely inside.

I went to the front bar to ask about a slim Jim or at least a wire hanger. They had neither, but pointed me to the homeless guy who hangs out front. He had gotten out of jail just days prior for busting into vehicles.
He seemed enthusiastic although felt compelled to explain to me repeatedly that he no longer engaged in this sort of illicit behavior. I assured him that I believed that he had been fully rehabilitated by the state's fine penal system, but if he could bust into Penny before the band went on in a half hour, there was a crisp twenty in it for him.
I know the gentlemen gave me his name when we shook hands on the deal, but truthfully it escaped me because I was trying to figure out if he had a very large gap in-between two of his front teeth or if there was once a very small tooth in there. The mystery was consuming me.
He promptly went to work with a wire hanger, a Swiss army knife and something that looked like an oyster shucker.
After 15 minutes he admitted that if he was trying to actually steal something out of this car, he would have abandoned it by now or broken the windows - this was beyond his abilities.
We thanked him, gave him a five for his trouble and watched him look suspiciously around for police while he ditched his tools of the trade into the dumpster. I dialed triple A and resigned myself to missing the show.
The AAA guy showed up quicker than I expected and while I stood in the beam of his truck headlights and watched him struggle with the vent window latch, I listened to Paul's voice eke out through the brick wall to the club. It became quickly apparent that even to a seasoned professional Penny would not relinquish her chastity so easily.
He finally managed to pop the vent lock to the sound of the next to last song in the set. I grabbed up keys, phone and wallet and rushed into the club in time to see the last song. I dangled the keys like a victorious battle flag and from the stage, Paul asked for round of applause from a subdued crowd for the American Automobile Association.
It was like someone sank a putt.

I headed for the black door marked employees only and found myself once again in the sleazy yet appealing embrace of the Earl's green room. Fortunately this time, I had the good sense to borrow a camera.

its okay - at least I got hear it.
As far as you missing the show - that is A-okay. Next weekend is the big important one and we need as many warm bodies as humanly possible, so if you could walk, crawl or roll there we would be forever grateful. :)

something about penny the touring van strikes me as evil. i have no idea what... it's some vibe. it's like christine for the whole family.

i love the walls at earl's green room however. i hope someone has the good sense to enshrine them in some pop-culture museum after earl's has moved on to it's next life as a starbucks.

It is because Paul purposely used the patented "Batman villian tilt angle" when he took the picture.
I assure you she is perfectly tame, just the same we don't like to speak ill of her...

that comic strip is genius! i'm really impressed.

there's a lot of bathroom scribblings out here but it's all very uninteresting. you won't even see a poorly sketched blowjob drawing anymore! instead all the kids do these days is "tagging". blah i say.

Why was I expecting Penny the Tour Van to be a VW microbus (possibly loaded with shovels and rakes and other implements of de-struck-shin?)

I love the bottom picture, the smiling face drawn on a brick. Like an (unwitting?) homage to Sam Brown.

On the bright side, knowing that a practiced car thief couldn't open your vehicle even given plenty of time and encouragement to do so...that's gotta be a rare sort of bonus, doesn't it?

oh my god! yes! thank you soooo much.
i'm telling you, there is a peculiarly southern feel to that stuff.
i think from all my greenroom days of hanging out at smith's or masquerade or wherever back when my brother was in bands and i was a bit younger. i dunno, it's a very cemented thing of my history. those atlanta greenroom graffitis.

and i'm just shocked at what would posess someone to draw a full hillbillytroll to such excellent detail and perspective. the time it must've taken! (i also like the shame guys and the smiling brick guy).

You know I have never been in the greenroom at Smith's! Now I feel like I am missing something.

I LOVE the hillbilly troll! The expression is a bit cryptic, but the whole thing was too exquisite not to have a picture of. In additon, I really dig the Charlie Brown with the 3 eyes just to the right.

The hand/cancer one brings back fond memories of abusing my friends. Including the one that goes:

"Open your hand flat."
"Here's the main house" (point to thumb)
"Here's the guest house" (index finger)
"Here's the garage" (middle finger)
"Here's the barn" (ring finger)
"Here's the dog house" (pinky)
"Where do you want the pool?"
Wait for rube to point to a location, usually the center of the palm.
Spit on that location.
Run.

funny story.
[info]pantsie
2003-07-10 09:26 am UTC (link)
Well, funny to me at least.

My husband Charles and I spent a good deal of time down in Florida last year, taking care of a family member while she was sick.

That's not the funny part.

While we were away, my friend H. volunteered to take care of our cat. Charles was so distressed by the idea of our cat having an attachment to another guy, that he claimed that he was now "uncle daddy" to our cat. When Charles returned to the household, he took up his rightful position as "daddy", and H. took on the title of "uncle daddy".

Yesterday, I saw your photo of the "uncle daddy malted PAH!" picture above, and the memories came flooding back. I sent H. the picture right away, and he was emotionally scarred.

That was the funny part.

The End.
